Working as Touring LD & House LD at Bumbershoot! Vlog Episode 2/2
Money. Well. Welcome to day. Two of the, Bumbershoot vlogs, I, don't you notice but it's acting, a little bit more like Seattle today and. I love it I love the rainy weather and, even. When we got events going on always. A great day when it's raining now I wasn't planning. On coming into. Seattle. This early it is, let's. See five o'clock now I, was. Originally supposed to come in quite. A bit later but I got a text saying that one. Of our touring. Crews got, in a little bit early so I hopped in the car came down and, I'm. Excited to be using a brand new piece of gear that I just purchased. Unboxed. It a little bit earlier today and, that is the brainstorm. S, r11 to be. Strip Eliezer. Timecode. Signal is a little bit different. Than regular, audio. Signal, and that's. You. Know if you've run it through any DSP. Or processing. You can damage, it and cause, it to be, not. Read by equipment that you need to read it so. Excited, to be using that we're just showing up here so. Head over to front of house, check. In with everybody see, what needs to get done. I. Know. The rain looks pretty. Sketch and. Kind of this but it's, not too bad the, overhang, of the Sam. 575. Stays, with the rain covers it. Means the the. Wind. Has to be blowing pretty hard to blow it into the. Fixtures, we've, masked out the height, on. Stage, so, should. Be good as long as the wind doesn't pick up. So, this guy's not. Resetting. His position, when I power cycle. I'm. Not sure why let's see if we can do a good old manual, reset. That's, weird. No, it's uh it's, not resetting, the tilt when it power, cycles, so. I think it has a weird weird thing with the sensor. So. I'm seeing if there's a. I'd. Rather have this one that we can like manually, reset it from the console, I. Say. Manually, reset but, I actually mean just running, the tilts full negative. 90 plus 90. Makes. A god-awful noise but it actually uh actually. Fixes it temporarily. At least we had a few on the zombie. Boy tour that. I. Think. Actually just one of them that was really bad it would. Get. Reset. And it would stay negative, 90 and. No. Matter what you did with the reset Channel it would not reset, but. I just ended up manually doing it by running it up to 90 and then back to negative 90 in it and fixed itself. So. Shaheen teller the creators LV is out there in the darkness. Programming. And. Each. Headliner. If, there's a show that has like multiple, top. Billing. Artists. On the stage on the same day a, lot. Of times they'll bring in okay, package. And, that is, the. Case with Tyler the Creator so they've got this little package here JD sees Vipers, and, these. Upstage vipers. It can get kind of complex and you got a lot of different. Artists with their, own ground packages, and changing over a limited, time so Shahin, is down there finishing. Up his programming. And I wanted to talk a little bit about. House. LD etiquette, when it comes to touring. L DS now. You may notice that I, am, way up in the bleachers in. Front of houses down there, and. That's because I've been on both sides of the coin where, the. House LD sometimes, and sometimes. I am buttering, LD. So. I, know, how both parties feel and I. Know, that I like, to be left alone when I need, to program a show, that's. Just because I, have, limited time usually, only you. Know like an hour. Maybe. Two and. The. More time I have to, just buckle, down and get things done with as little as, few distractions as possible, the better look. And here's the thing it's not to say that you can't. Be helpful, to, touring L knees I mean, you just need, to be able to gauge, the situation and. Recognize. When you know maybe your assistance, or advice is helpful, and. When someone just needs to buckle down and and. Get their work done because that's you. Know what we're all here to do is get, a job done and it, just so happens that the touring LDS usually, only have. Maybe. An hour and a half sometimes, they have to do it and change over, to. Make the show work and make it look good for their artists and that's their number one, I mean, you really don't know if this is someone's first time running, this show you don't know if you. Know they're filling in for their buddy that normally runs the show and if you can see that someone's obviously struggling with something or you. Can maybe help them out with, critical, information and that's always welcome of course all, right that should be obvious.
That's. The thing though just make, sure that you can gauge, the situation with, every. Every. Touring LD because, oftentimes. They've been traveling the whole day maybe, they just, rolled up to the site after getting, off the plane just. Need to take all that into consideration yes, touring LD is an awesome, job but. Recognize. That there, are some significant, downsides, and make sure that you know how to mitigate. Those downsides, as they. Are welcomed into your venue or your show because they. Are your guests, of LD you should treat a massage. Well. Welcome to the, show days of. Undershoot, 2019. I'm. In the like main little pavilion area the. Fountain, and the needle all. Sorts of cool stuff. Just. Had a little bit of a break from helping. All of our guests tell these on mainstage gonna, head back over and get, ready to run openers, tonight, it's a pretty easy night for me in, comparison, to tomorrow. Doors. Open in like 10 minutes and tonight. Got. Like five guests of these and I'm just running like the first two acts but, tomorrow, is gonna be insane because Louis. The child is gonna be playing the stage that I'm also house lving, so, I also, have to run, all the all the acts and, my. Own act as well. Joe. Cole designed this stage and he's, the one in charge of determining, which fixtures, go, where and how. Many of them we use a typical festival, lighting plot will have five. To six sometimes, more types. Of fixtures, each suited, for their own purposes. And real quickly on this rig for the, spot slash profile. Fixture, as I mentioned in the previous Bumbershoot, video we're, using the artiste, a Picasso's. Those have framing. Shutters so. They can kind of do double duty either, as a profile, for, bands. Or as a spot, fixture for. Or, basically. Just an all-around spotlight. The wash fixtures, are elation. Z-w. 37's. The beam fixtures are, elation. Platinum beam 5r, extremes. Roby color strobes, are doing, double duty as both an LED wash and the, strobe light and finally we have a set of two, cell LED, blinders. You might hear, these referred to as mola phase or moles, those are the traditional. Incandescent version. Of these lights I know I mentioned it in the previous video but these Picasso's, have really. Impressed me especially the aerial, effects this is a daytime. Shot and yeah, of course they're in not, quite open white but more of a CTB, color, correction, color and yeah there is a black, backdrop here, so that helps a little bit even in person you could see the, beams coming out into the daylight in the, middle of the day at full, widezoom, with, a gobo inserted, it's pretty cool and when. Touring l DS show up to do their show on our, rig essentially. The entire programming. Time isn't spent, building a show file it's spent merging, in the. New, fixtures, for this stage into, their existing show filing and that's really what the programming, time slot is all for oh. It's. Finally here the big day the, final day of Bumbershoot and we. Got a pretty full schedule, ahead of us it's 8 a.m. just. Parked. Gonna. Go head over and get, front-of-house turned. On and get, the rig talking, and then, my favorite part of the day is going to be prepping. Our, ground, package for Lois the child provided, by our 90, lighting and I'm going to show you guys all the details and show. You how we're gonna set it up, should be fun. Good. Morning Scott. Are. Oh Yeah, bird what. Do you think of our crowns over, I. Almost wore my Gary. Well. We're all finished with programming. Our ground package, it's all packed away the stage is clear and ready for Reza's. Team Alex. Is, Reza's. LD, and, he. Taught, me a very very. Fun thing that I've started. Doing when I am when, I'm house LD and that, is in. The advanced packet, if everybody. Reads, all the way through it at. The bottom it says email. Me or message me with your choice, of front-of-house, beverage, so, he. Sent me what. He wanted and I'm. Gonna run over to store. Buy. You a, dr.. Pepper so earlier this. Is. The perfect thing right now actually it's great thank you. Can't. Wait to go. Program. These pixel bars on stage. Even. Though our programming, session on stage was, already. Complete I wanted, to spend a little more time with the pixel, issue strips, and the trust hours cleaning, them up to make them look as good as possible for when we roll them onstage for the show I also wanted, to go through every, fixture and make sure all of the settings were exactly, how I wanted them so that the pixel orientation. Worked, properly, with the pixel mapping since, we were using resolume. To output artnet to all 24, of these pixel strips we not only had to set the address and the channel mode like you would with any normal DMX, fixture but we also had, to make sure that we had no conflicting, IP. Addresses. And that. They were all set to the proper artnet. Universe, so while the other acts were soundchecking I was systematically, going through every pixel strip to make sure that the settings were correct. And I, also took the time to clean, up the cabling and make the truss towers look as nice, as possible to. Finish out this video I thought it would be fun to strap, a GoPro, to my head and, show. This time when we're kind of lacking in gigs it's nice to look, back at some of the more fun ones that I did this year and put, together these videos it's true that this industry really is one. Big family and I can't, wait to get, back out there and do, more shows with everyone, I also want to extend, my gratitude to, the. Entire lose the child crew, both. The touring crew and the. Management, team as well as, Fred. And Robbie today, we're actually supposed to be wrapping, up our rehearsals. For a, tour, that was going to start basically, this week and when, all these cancellations, hit it meant that we had to basically move. The entire, tour back, a few months long.
